Rajam is the pioneer of the revolutionary Gayaki Ang, which highly influenced the whole country to follow suit, so much so that she is now known as the Singing Violin. Coming from a family of traditional musicians, she mastered the Carnatic style at a very young age, and later ventured into the Hindustani style, and made a path-breaking entry through her Gayaki Ang. Apart from being a great performer, Dr. Rajam has also served as a Professor and Dean in Banaras Hindu University for 40 years and has been the recipient of countless awards including one of the highest civilian honours in India, the Padmashri & the Padmabhushan. More About Dr. Rajam.

The courses will be conducted by Dr. N. Rajam, her brother, Narayan Ganesh, her daughter, Dr. Sangeeta Shankar and her grand-daughters, Ragini Shankar and Nandini Shankar, who have trained with her for more than 20 years and been highly lauded and appreciated by audiences worldwide.

For many decades, we have been receiving numerous requests from violin enthusiasts all over the world to impart the knowledge of Indian Music and the Gayaki Ang. Only few have been able to travel to India to learn, but could not pursue it further as they had to return to their country. Rajam School of Violin has been founded for the many students who yearn to learn from the masters themselves.

Be it beginners, amateurs or highly qualified professional violinists, Rajam School of Violin caters to all kinds of students with a personalized approach towards teaching. Each student is guided as per his ability to grasp, his talent and his experience at the right pace.

Nandini Shankar

Nandini Shankar started her training in violin at the tender age of 3 and gave her first performance when she was just 8. She performed her first solo at the age of 13, and ever since, has performed not only in numerous parts of the country, but has also been appreciated by audiences all over the world for her confidence and involvement in her music. Narayan Ganesh

He hails from the family which has produced legendary violinists Padmabhushan Prof T N Krishnan and Padmabhushan Dr. Smt N Rajam. He had his training on the violin from his illustrious father Vidwan Late Shri. A Narayan Iyer who was an exemplary teacher. Narayan Ganesh has also had his training from his brother Prof T N Krishnan and his sister Dr. N Rajam. He is an equally capable sarod player having had his training from the legendary Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. He has played many concerts with his sister Dr. N Rajam in India. Having lived for 40 years in United States, he has performed sarod concerts there as well.

The Gayaki Ang, literally meaning ‘to play as though sung’ refers to the technique developed in violin by Dr. N. Rajam, which helps violinists to produce sounds through the violin, which emulate the human voice. Hence the subtleties and emotions of the human voice are reproduced on the violin. People all over the world are mesmerized by this form of music, as it has the capacity to touch and move millions of hearts.

Beginners would be guided on the very basics – right from how to hold the violin, to understanding the 7 swaras (notes), learning the correct exercises and techniques – all which build a solid musical foundation for further learning.

Amateurs would be guided on understanding and improvising in various Raagas, learning the nuances of the Gayaki Ang and creating a polish and finesse of perfection in their performances.
Professional violinists would be taught advanced techniques and complexities found nowhere else in the world. The course would make any violinist’s music sound extraordinary and par excellence.

Students are selected on the basis of an initial interview process, subject to availability of teachers.

Each lesson is conducted for 45 minutes. There will be 4 classes in a month (1 per week).

The student has the option to choose between one-on-one lessons or group lessons (small group of 3 students). One-on-one lessons offer more flexibility in terms of rescheduling classes. Dr. Rajam is available to teach only for one-on-one lessons.

You could discuss this at the time of your first interview with the teacher. You will be allotted one slot, which is subject to rescheduling at the discretion of the teacher, on mutual consent and convenience.

You may contact violinteachers@gmail.com and request for rescheduling of the lesson. The reason for rescheduling/cancelling must be clearly stated, along with preferred timings for the rescheduled lesson. The new lesson shall be conducted as per the discretion of the teacher.
Note: The request for rescheduling/cancelling a lesson must be made at least 48 HOURS PRIOR to the lesson, else the request shall stand void (except in the cases of emergency). Group lessons have fixed time slots and cannot be rescheduled.

You may request for a particular teacher, but the allotment of teachers is solely on the basis of availability of the teacher. Please note that the content of the lessons would be the same irrespective of the teacher allotted to you.

We accept EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) mode of payment. Payment must be made on the first of each month, in advance, for 4 classes.
